Intel ha presentado un nuevo procesador de bajo consumo  destinado a teléfonos móviles de nueva generación, reproductores mp3 y ordenadores portátiles ultrafinos. Su nombre es Atom y su tamaño, inferior a los 25 mm², lo convierte en el procesador más pequeño desarrollado por la firma californiana.

El procesador, que durante su desarrollo fue conocido como Silverthorne y Diamondville, se fabricará con tecnología de 45 nm, contará con 47 millones de transistores y será capaz de trabajar a velocidades de hasta 1,8 GHz. Se pondrá a la venta en el segundo trimestre del año a un precio todavía por conocer, aunque las previsiones indican que los dispositivos que los utilicen deberían costar menos de 300 dólares.

La principal característica es que ha sido creada pensando específicamente en los dispositivos portátiles a los que va a ir dirigida. De ahí que tengan fundadas esperanzas de que se convierta en el micro de referencia de una nueva categoría de equipos compactos, de bajo coste y con conexión permanente a Internet vía wireless que saldrán a finales de año bajo la denominación de netbooks.
